This is one of several very similar moths which can be difficult to separate. It is quite variable in size. The dark markings on the forewing often form the shape of a cross.
It can sometimes be found at rest by day on tree-trunks, seeming to prefer oak.
Woodland, grassland, heathland, scrub and fens.
