General Information

The flight season of this species actually overlaps with the September Thorn, so this cannot be used to distinguish them.

 

Pupates in the leaves of the food plant.

Overwinters as Overwinters as an egg.
Both sexes readily come to light, sometimes in numbers.
Often found at rest during day

Forewing length: 18-22mm.
Foodplant(s): Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur), Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea), lime (Tilia spp.), elms (Ulmus spp.), Beech (Fagus sylvatica), birches (Betula spp.), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)
Flying: One generation, mid August-late September
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Local

Habitat

Woodland, parkland, hedgerows, scrub and gardens.

Regional Information

Recorded in 27 (10%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
