This moth is easily confused with I. masculella although the costa markings differ slightly and the males of oehlmanniella have simple antennae unlike the combed antennae of I. mascuella.
The larvae produce a small blotch mine which is elongated to form a linear mine. Eventually, a case is cut from the end of blotch and the cased larvae feed on dead leaves on the ground.
