General Information

This is the smallest moth found in the UK. It has a bronzy brown forewing with a silver fascia and a purple suffusion.

 

The larvae create a distinctive fine gallery which forms a spiral around the egg shell. The inner ring turns bright red before the larvae make an irregular gallery across the leaf.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a pupa.

Wingspan: 3-4 mm.
Foodplant(s): Sheep's Sorrel (Rumex acetosella), Common Sorrel (Rumex acetosa)
Flying: Two/three overlapping generations, April-July
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Nationally Scarce B
