General Information

The nominate form of this species is known as the Angle-barred Pug. There are two other forms; rustica (the Ash Pug) and tamariscata (Tamarisk Pug). There are differing opinions as to whether Ash Pug is a separate species (in Europe it is listed separately). There is also a view that Angle-barred Pug does not occur in this country and that they are all forms of Ash Pug.

 

Pupates in a crevice, in leaf litter or in loose soil.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a pupa.
Both sexes come to light but in small numbers only.

Forewing length: 10-12mm
Foodplant(s): Ash (Fraxinus excelsior), Sea-buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), Tamarisk (Tamarix gallica), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), Elder (Sambucus nigra)
Flying: Two generations, May-June and August
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Woodland, hedgerows, parks and gardens.

Regional Information

Recorded in 30 (11.1%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
