General Information

This is a highly variable species.

 

Pupates in loose soil.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a larva.
Both sexes readily come to light, sometimes in numbers.

Forewing length: 13-17mm.
Foodplant(s): Primrose (Primula vulgaris), violets (Viola spp.), Bramble (Rubus fruticosus), Heather (Calluna vulgaris), Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), sallows (Salix spp.), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), Hazel (Corylus avellana), broadleaved shrubs
Flying: One generation, June-July
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Heathland, woodland, fens, scrub, hedgerows and grassland.

Regional Information

Recorded in 84 (31.1%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.

Last recorded in August 2023

Recorded date range (Adult): 13 May to 15 September
