General Information

This species has a grey forewing with a narrow, reddish-brown and black striped central cross-band. This band has a double-toothed trailing edge on the outer edge of the wing. The amount of black and pinkish-red is quite variable.

 

Pupates in loose soil.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a pupa.
Both sexes readily come to light, sometimes in numbers.

Forewing length: 11-14mm.
Foodplant(s): Wallflower (Erysimum cheiri), cabbages (Brassica spp.)
Flying: Two generations, May-June and late July-August
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Grassland, moorland, low-lying woodland and hedgerows.

Regional Information

Recorded in 37 (13.7%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
