General Information

The status of the four Dioryctria species in Britain is uncertain as they are very difficult to tell apart.

 

D. simplicella tends to have less contrast on the forewing markings than the other three species and is usually smaller than D. abietella, which it is perhaps most often confused with.


Wingspan: 24-30 mm.
Foodplant(s): pines (Pinus spp.)
Flying: Two generations, July and September
National status: Local

Habitat

Conifer plantations and heathland.

Regional Information

Recorded in 9 (3.3%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.

Last recorded in September 2022
