General Information

This species is smaller than the other underwings.

 

Pupates in loose soil.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a larva.
Both sexes readily come to light, sometimes in numbers.
Flies during the day

Forewing length: 14-17mm.
Foodplant(s): Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), Common Mallow (Malva sylvestris), grasses, sallows (Salix spp.), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), broadleaved shrubs
Flying: One generation, July-August
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Open woodland, hedgerows and gardens.

Regional Information

Recorded in 104 (38.5%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
