General Information

This is a quite variable species, with the ground colour ranging from ochreous-yellow to dark brown.

 

Pupates in loose soil.

Overwinters as Overwinters as an egg.
Both sexes come to light.

Forewing length: 13-16mm.
Foodplant(s): oaks (Quercus spp.), elms (Ulmus spp.), birches (Betula spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), Hazel (Corylus avellana), willows (Salix spp.), Aspen (Populus tremula), Field Maple (Acer campestre), broadleaved trees, broadleaved shrubs
Flying: One generation, mid July-mid September
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Woodland, heathland, scrub, fens, grassland with scrub.

Regional Information

Recorded in 138 (51.1%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
