General Information

This is a very variable species.

 

Pupates in leaf litter.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a larva.
Both sexes come to light.
Often found at rest during day

Forewing length: 19-26mm.
Foodplant(s): Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), oaks (Quercus spp.), birches (Betula spp.), Barberry (Berberis vulgaris), Broom (Cytisus scoparius), Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), Heather (Calluna vulgaris), spruces (Picea spp.), cypresses (Cypressus spp.), broadleaved trees, broadleaved shrubs
Flying: One generation, June-mid August
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Woodland, heathland, scrub, grassland, hedgerows and gardens.

Regional Information

Recorded in 138 (51.1%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
