General Information

This species is widespread in southern Britain, but it is subject to large fluctuations in numbers.

The distinctive larvae initially form a narrow gallery mine lined with frass, before making a series of large translucent yellowish brown blotch mines from which all the frass is ejected. They also construct an network of silk threads under the mined leaf in which they move around and rest clear of the leaf surface when not feeding.
