General Information

The male of this species is a quite variable. The females are completely wingless.

 

Pupates in loose soil.

Overwinters as Overwinters as an egg.
Male readily comes to light, sometimes in numbers. Female not.
Often found at rest during day

Forewing length: 18-25mm.
Foodplant(s): oaks (Quercus spp.), birches (Betula spp.), Hazel (Corylus avellana), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), Apple (Malus domestica), Dog-rose (Rosa canina), Goat Willow (Salix caprea), maples (Acer spp.), Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa), elms (Ulmus spp.), broadleaved trees
Flying: One generation, October-January
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Woodland, scrub, hedgerows, gardens and heathland.

Regional Information

Recorded in 53 (19.6%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
