General Information

This is an early spring species. The female is wingless and the male is quite variable.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a pupa.
Male readily comes to light, sometimes in numbers. Female not.
Often found at rest during day

Forewing length: 15-17mm.
Foodplant(s): Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur), Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), birches (Betula spp.), elms (Ulmus spp.), Hazel (Corylus avellana), Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa)
Flying: One generation, mid February-March
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Local

Habitat

Mature oak woodland and hedgerows.

Regional Information

Recorded in 18 (6.7%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.

Last recorded in February 2024

Recorded date range (Adult): 31 January to 21 April

Recorded date range (Larva/Leafmine): 16 May to 01 June
