General Information

The typical form of this species is brownish, but the dark grey ab.obscurissima is also quite common, especially in urban areas.

 

Pupates in a crevice, in leaf litter or in loose soil.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a pupa.
Both sexes come to light.

Forewing length: 10-12mm.
Foodplant(s): Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), Barberry (Berberis vulgaris), sallows (Salix spp.), Aspen (Populus tremula), ragworts (Senecio spp.), knapweeds (Centaurea spp.), Yarrow (Achillia millefolium), Burnet-saxifrage (Pimpinella saxifraga), Betony (Stachys officinalis), broadleaved trees, herbaceous plants
Flying: One generation, May-June
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Gradens, hedgerows, scrub, heathland and woodland.

Regional Information

Recorded in 84 (31.1%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.

Last recorded in July 2023
