General Information

This moth has narrow bronzy forewings with a broad silvery fascia and a purplish tinge. It is very similar to S. hybnerella.


The larvae create a slender gallery mine, often following the leaf margin, which broadens abruptly with hairpin bends.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a pupa.

Wingspan: 4-5 mm.
Foodplant(s): hawthorns (Crataegus spp.)
Flying: One generation, May-June
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Regional Information

Recorded in 209 (77.4%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
