General Information

One of the smaller members of the Lasiocampidae and unlikely to be confused with other moths flying at the time of year.

 

Pupates in a cocoon in leaf litter.

Overwinters as Overwinters as an egg.
Both sexes readily come to light, sometimes in numbers.

Forewing length: 14-17mm.
Foodplant(s): birches (Betula spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.)
Flying: One generation, August-September
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Heathland and the edges of woodland. Favours sunny locations.

Regional Information

Recorded in 26 (9.6%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
