General Information

The black paw-shaped mark beyond the centre and the dark leading edge of the light, grey/brown speckled forewing coupled with the sharply pointed hindwing distinguish this moth from the Sharp-angled Peacock (M. alternata).

 

Pupates in plant debris.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a pupa.
Both sexes come to light.
Often disturbed during day

Forewing length: 14-16mm.
Foodplant(s): birches (Betula spp.), sallows (possibly) (Salix spp.)
Flying: Two generations, late May-early July and late July-August
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Local

Habitat

Broadleaved birch woodland, often on chalk.

Regional Information

Recorded in 22 (8.1%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.

Last recorded in August 2022

Recorded date range (Adult): 03 May to 02 September
