General Information

This species is easily confused with A. propinquella and genital dissection is usually required for a definitive identification.

 

There is some variation, with f. rhodochrella, for example, having a darker head and thorax and more distinct wing markings (see photos).

Overwinters as Overwinters as an adult.
Both sexes come to light.

Wingspan: 16-22 mm
Foodplant(s): knapweeds (Centaurea spp.), thistles (Carduus spp.)
Flying: One generation, August-May (hibernates)
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Open ground, hillsides, waste ground and roadside verges where foodplant found.

Regional Information

Recorded in 48 (17.8%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.

Last recorded in July 2022
