General Information

The male of this species is quite variable. A dark form, f. fuscata is very dark brown.

 

Pupates in loose soil.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a pupa.
Male readily comes to light, sometimes in numbers. Female not.
Often found at rest during day

Forewing length: 16-20mm.
Foodplant(s): Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur), Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), birches (Betula spp.), Hazel (Corylus avellana), willows (Salix spp.), elms (Ulmus spp.), maples (Acer spp.), Apple (Malus domestica), plums (Prunus spp.), broadleaved trees
Flying: One generation, February-April
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Woodland, gardens, heathland and scrub.

Regional Information

Recorded in 70 (25.9%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
