General Information

The females of this species are completely wingless. There is a melanic form f. monacharia.

 

Pupates in an underground cocoon.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a pupa.
Male readily comes to light, sometimes in numbers. Female not.
Often found at rest during day

Forewing length: 19-24mm.
Foodplant(s): oaks (Quercus spp.), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), Apple (Malus domestica), birches (Betula spp.), Alder (Alnus glutinosa), Hazel (Corylus avellana), Goat Willow (Salix caprea), poplars (Populus spp.), lime (Tilia spp.), elms (Ulmus spp.), Ash (Fraxinus excelsior), broadleaved trees, broadleaved shrubs
Flying: One generation, late December-March
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common
