General Information

This species has a forewing which is a varying shade of grey with a distinct central dot and a line of very fine dark dashes/dots along the outer edge. There is usually a narrow, indistinct, straight central cross-band. Other cross-lines are often very faint or absent.

 

There is a rare melanic form f. bischoffaria.

 

Pupates in a cocoon on the ground.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a larva.
Both sexes readily come to light, sometimes in numbers.

Forewing length: 9-11mm.

Flying: Two generations, June-July and August-September
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common

Habitat

Woodland, heathland, grassland, gardens.

Regional Information

Recorded in 67 (24.8%) of the 270 2km squares of Huntingdonshire.
